Eagle Island State Park is a public recreation area on the outskirts of Eagle covering 545 acres. Bordered on the north and south by the Boise River, Eagle Island features a swimming beach, a grassy picnic area, and more than five miles of trails for horseback riding, hiking, or walking your dog. The park is open to non-motorized boats for day-use visitors. Although there is no longer camping allowed at this state park, Eagle has many private campgrounds, including the Hi Valley RV Resort in Eagle, just 10 minutes from the park, and the Boise-Meridian KOA to the south and nearby.
The state continues to improve the park, thanks to a master plan 10 years in the making. It includes a new park entrance, new bathroom facilities, and three new ponds. But the most anticipated addition to the park is the zip line that sends visitors sailing over the Boise River. There are other zip lines for every level of skill.
The park's other recreational facilities include its campground, swimming beach, grassy picnic area, hiking and equestrian trails, an 18-hole disc golf course and a water slide. The water slide is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. In the cooler months, visitors can experience world-class terrain parks and tubing hills in the park. Whether tubing or catching air in the terrain park, visitors will have an affordable and fun-filled afternoon
The park was first purchased by the state in 1929. Prior to that, the land was used for agricultural purposes, primarily as grazing by cattle and hogs, as well as agricultural crops like grain, hay, and vegetables. Agricultural land still surrounds the park. Later, the site was operated as a penitentiary farm until 1977, and in 1983, the state developed the site as the park it is today.
