Greenwood Lake is situated on the border between New Jersey and New York, making it one of the few bi-state lakes in the United States. The lake stretches approximately seven miles in length, with the southern portion located in West Milford, New Jersey.

The lake is home to a diverse range of fish species, including largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, pickerel, walleye, perch, sunfish, and catfish. Anglers can target different species depending on the season and their preferences, with opportunities for both freshwater and gamefish fishing.

Before modern refrigeration, ice was harvested from Greenwood Lake and sent to New York City residents and businesses.

Attraction Advice

Fishing is available year-round, but many species have regulations regarding season and size, as well as catch and release only. Both New York and New Jersey fishing licenses are recognized anywhere on the lake or along the shoreline. Fishing is permitted 24 hours a day. In compliance with New York regulations, only certified virus-free baitfish may be transported to, or used on, the portion of Greenwood Lake owned by the State of New York. Anglers are urged to use only certified virus-free baitfish when fishing any portion of Greenwood Lake. No more than five tip-ups and two hand-held devices may be used when ice fishing. All devices that are not handheld must be marked with the name and address of the angler.
