Jerry's Rogue Jets

Operating from the coastal town of Gold Beach, Oregon, Jerry’s Rogue Jets offers visitors an unparalleled opportunity to explore the untamed beauty of the legendary Rogue River. Since its inception in 1958, this family-founded enterprise has grown into an iconic institution on the Southern Oregon coast. It all began when three pioneering brothers—Jerry, Alden, and Court Boice—revolutionized regional tourism by becoming the first to introduce hydro-jet propulsion technology to commercial passenger boats in the United States. Today, the business represents nearly 160 years of combined maritime legacy following its 2010 merger with the historic Rogue River Mail Boats, seamlessly blending thrilling recreation with deep-seated local tradition.

An adventure with Jerry’s Rogue Jets officially launches at their riverfront headquarters, which features a captivating, artifact-rich museum that chronicles the colorful pioneer history of the region. From the docks, travelers embark on a choice of three seasonal excursions—spanning 64, 80, or 104 round-trip miles—that chart a course upriver into the remote, pristine canyons of the Rogue-Siskiyou National Forest. Along the way, Coast Guard-certified captains deliver a masterclass in nature-based tourism, utilizing onboard public address systems to weave together native lore, historical facts, and unscripted humor. Most tours include a scenic stopover in the isolated hamlet of Agness, where passengers can step ashore to enjoy a hearty, home-style buffet lunch at a historic riverside lodge before making the return journey.

The true engineering marvel behind this attraction lies in the sophisticated hydro-jet technology developed and refined on these very waters. Unlike standard vessels that rely on exposed propellers, these custom-built, triple-engine watercraft use powerful, flush-mounted impellers that draw water in and force it through a steerable nozzle. Because no propulsion components protrude below the hull, these massive boats—capable of carrying up to 65 passengers—can safely skim across turbulent rapids and navigate through river stretches measuring a mere eight inches deep. This unique mechanism allows the pilots to execute exhilarating maneuvers, including signature 360-degree spins that send refreshing walls of river spray over the passengers, thrilling adults and teenagers alike.

Beyond the mechanical excitement, the tour serves as an exclusive window into a protected wilderness ecosystem teeming with Pacific Northwest wildlife. As the jet boats glide out of the coastal estuary and into deep, rugged canyons, passengers frequently spot majestic bald eagles and ospreys nesting high in the cliffside trees. The quiet gravel bars and forested shorelines provide optimal viewing for river otters, black bears coming down to the water for a drink, and occasionally even black-tailed deer or elusive mountain lions. Because the longer routes enter the strictly regulated "Wild Section" of the river—an area protected by the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968—Jerry's holds the exclusive commercial permit to transport travelers into ancient terrain otherwise reachable only by multi-day hiking or intense whitewater rafting.

What truly solidifies Jerry’s Rogue Jets as a unique American treasure is its enduring connection to the United States Postal Service. The classic 64-mile tour faithfully follows the exact route established in 1895 when riverboats were the only viable way to deliver mail, medicine, and groceries to remote homesteaders lacking road access. Even now, the company maintains its official mail contract, allowing passengers to witness a living piece of history as their captain pulls up to deliver modern-day letters and parcels to the Agness post office. Combining historical preservation, vital community utility, wildlife observation, and high-speed aquatic thrills, a day on the river with Jerry's provides an unforgettable immersion into the raw spirit of the Oregon frontier.
