San Marcos has been a favorite destination for visitors for more than 12,000 years . An underwater archeological dig in Spring Lake at the Headwaters of the San Marcos River uncovered artifacts dating back to the Clovis Indians, the oldest known inhabitants of the western hemisphere.

Conveniently located in Central Texas between Austin and San Antonio, San Marcos truly is in the center of everything. So no matter where you are, you will not have far to go. San Marcos boasts a unique multicultural heritage and history where Hispanic, African-American, German, Anglo and other cultural influences are a part of everyday life.

Visitors have enjoyed touring the Balcones Fault Line Cave for over 105 years at Wonder World Park, the first commercial show cave in Texas. Today, while the cave is still a highpoint, the park has many other attractions for family fun and educational entertainment. The Meadows Center Glass-Bottom Boat Tours offers interpretive and self-guided tours, historic glass bottom boat rides, wildlife viewing, wetlands boardwalk, Texas River exhibits, nature-friendly gift shop and much more.

The Performing Arts Center at Texas State University San Marcos is the center of the arts for the entire community.

Housed in a 1943 vintage wooden hangar, the Central Texas Wing is home to airworthy historic military warbirds. Aircraft include a B-25 Mitchell Bomber and the only flying Bell P-39 fighter plane in the western hemisphere.

The Hays County Courthouse in San Marcos is a historic courthouse built during the Classical Revival style in 1908 and is recognized by both the National Register of Historic Places.

The San Marcos River bubbles to life from hundreds of springs right in the City's center. Always a refreshing 72 degrees, the river is enjoyed year ‘round and especially provides cooling recreational activities, including tubing and paddle-boarding, during the hot Texas summers.
